Dear Parents,
Welcome to another school year! Your child is currently enrolled in Food Science and Nutrition. The structure of the class is such that students will study the Science of food/food processing and Nutrition. Units covered include: How do we experience food?, The role of water in our food, States of matter and food, Food processing, Human body (digestion/metabolism), Nutrition, How to read and use a food label, Vitamins and Minerals, Types of diets, Plants and where our food comes from, and Food safety/ Microbiology.
The foundation of this class is based on consumables which will be provided to your students. Though the district does supply this class with a minimum set of resources for in the classroom, the more consumable materials we are able to purchase, the more complete the experience for your child in our remote learning environment.
To make this class a success this semester, we'll either request donations or help with purchasing the supplies for your child. If you are not able to purchase supplies, I am kindly asking for a class donation to cover the cost of materials that will be purchased and set out for pick-up.
My number one goal of the class is to keep it hands-on. Our kids are spending so much time behind a computer screen... I want this to be fun and engaging for them! I have many lab/activities planned to keep students engaged, and I need your help to give that experience to them!
Supplies may include (but are not limited to):
Food dye, glass jar/clear glass cup, pizza box/small cardboard box, aluminium foil, plastic wrap/diplock bags, black paper or black plastic bags, s'mores supplies (graham crackers, marshmallows, chocolate), sugar, measuring cups, popcorn kernels, food containing fat (chips, cookies, etc), paper bag...and more!
To help with the consumable cost, we would be very appreciative of any monetary donation. We are hoping to work with a budget of around $800 for the entire semester for the entire class. We are asking for a $20-$30 donation. If you are not able to make a donation, we understand. All donations are voluntary and all students will be allowed to participate regardless of whether a donation is made.
A copy of the class guidelines, course objectives, goals, and an explanation of my grading policy have been posted on Schoology in the “Food Science and Nutrition” tile. Please review these with your child. My voicemail is 925-479-7780 and my email is
